Working with kids – what makes us tick

If I got a $1 for every time a parent said – I don’t know how you work with kids, I would be a very wealthy woman!

I would love to work out how many children we have fun with in a year, maybe once I am retired and have the time, I will be able to do that.

There are many fantastic reasons for working with kids, one of the best ones is that they really make you laugh as they tend to be brutally honest and you know exactly where you stand. The most recent funny was just last Tuesday  at our 10.30 class one of our youngest boys in the class saw his mum sit down on the bench outside the court. He shouted “Mum, why are you sitting down?” Mum says “don’t you want me to sit here?” boy “no, I want you to go!” It was very clear it is his class and he didn’t want Mum cramping his style!

I really like to feel that we can really have a positive impact on all the children that come through our programs.  We see lots of kids each week at Hippity Hop preschool sport, sometimes classes are easy, sometimes not, but having worked with young children for so long, we understand the child we see is part of a much bigger picture and you never know what that bigger picture is. People and families all have their ups and downs, trials and tribulations, and kids react to that, but we will ALWAYS do whatever we have to, to make sure that for the short time those children are with us we provide a positive, fun experience. Unfortunately we can’t change the world, but we can do some good in our own patch.

The same philosophy flows through our holiday program, and I know we are getting it right as we have so many kids who just do not want to go home at the end of the day. We often have kids who arrive nervous and not wanting to come to what they think is a normal vacation care program. With time and effort we manage to turn everyone of those kids into a child who is loving each and every minute they have with us.

Until next time.
